The Heist
If two's company, three's just trouble. When the trigger-happy Justin and Lance screw up Claudia's well-laid plans for the rural blood bank they've got to hit, an unexpected foe threatens to rip the trio apart.
Director's Notes
Vampires robbing a bloodbank: what’s not to like?
I’ve long been fascinated by vampire folklore and its rich cinematic tradition. However rather than create vamps who were single-minded villains lacking depth, I created complex, emotionally real protagonists who each related differently to their identity as vampire.
I was also interested in having strong women’s voices at the centre of the story (especially in the typically male-dominated genres of the heist and vampire), with some cool girl-kicking-butt action sequences thrown in for good measure.
Stylistically the film is kept in a grey area between social realism and overt fantasy. Black and white helps tell the story more in metaphor yet maintain a relatable ‘what if’ feel - I wanted the audience to start to really wonder what life would be like for this odd trio, what their history together was and what their future might hold.
The unconventional look at modern day vampires and mix of genres – slacker comedy meets vampire heist – was made immediately accessible by playing it over a more conventional narrative.
In a cultural climate dictated by addictions to sex, fame, creativity and information, The Heist was made to entertain and provoke a young, film-savvy audience of romantic rock ‘n’ vampires.
